The previous record, which has stood at 591 since November 1993, was broken by a score of 593 by Salford-born Charlotte Burgess (right) of the Bowmen of Bruntwood club, a member of the highly successful UK women's recurve team that won a bronze medal at the 2007 World Championships . Having narrowly missed selection for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games at the age of 17, 21-year old Charlotte was eliminated in the second round of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games individual finals by team mate Naomi Folkard, although her efforts in the Team competition put the UK Ladies Team into the semi-final, but they were narrowly edged out of the Bronze medal by the French.
The Matheson round is closely based on the Portsmouth round, being 60 arrows in 20 ends of three arrows, although uses a far smaller 40cm target face to compensate for the closer range. Theoretically, based on the relative angles, it should prove marginally more challenging than a Portsmouth, so relative scores will be monitorred , and if necessary, a percentage allowance applied to Matheson rounds submitted for inclusion in the Winter Series.
Excerpted from an Archery GB press release by Peter Jones.Paralympic archer Lynne Burton (left) has died at the age of 34. Lynne, an international archer since 2004, qualified to represent Team GB at this year's Paralympic Games in Beijing, but later had to withdraw. She died following an unexpected downturn in her medical condition, resulting in liver failure. "This is devastating, and has stunned us all," said Team GB Paralympic coach Tim Hazell, "Lynne was a lovely, bubbly character who never let anything get her down, she was an inspiration, and I am proud to have worked with her as a coach. "She was a fantastic ambassador for Archery GB, and it was such a massive disappointment after she qualified for Beijing to then have to withdraw. But even from hospital she still kept in touch and involved, and was a popular and highly respected member of the GB squad. "It goes without saying that everyone at Archery GB has been knocked for six by this news, and our sincere condolences have been sent to her family." Lynne had a double liver transplant, but earlier this year suffered a chronic rejection. Such was her determination to go to the Paralympics, however, she left hospital in London to make the qualifying shoot, and went straight back after securing her place in the team. Weeks later her condition forced her to withdraw from the Paralympics. Said Archery GB chief executive David Sherratt: "It was such a shattering blow for Lynne when she had to withdraw from the Paralympic Games, and was unable to fulfil her dream. But even in adversity she was always a lovely, bubbly, chatty person, and everyone at Archery GB has been numbed by this very sad news."
Island Archers is still interested in hearing from anyone who would like to gain nationally-recognised qualifications and allow them to safely teach archery to beginners of all ages, but does not necessarily have prior experience of archery. Anyone interested should contact the as soon as possible to book their place. Numbers are limited to 12 candidates, and costs are likely to be no more than £50 per person.
New boy James started the scoring strongly and considerably ahead, with initial ends of 27 and 28, although consistency deserted him as he scored a miss in the 5th end, from which he was never fully able to recover, despite a 29 in the 15th, end. This allowed Toby to sneak past to take the evening's high score of 527 to James' 510, and both leaving Stuart in their wake with his slightly-out-of-practice 462 for the round. That'll teach him to go on an extended holiday! Further details can be found on the WINTER SERIES page.

It's that time of year again, and membership fees are due by 30th September 2008.![]()
As many members are aware, the club membership fee includes a fee to the governing body, GNAS (or Archery GB, as they've recently been rebranded), to cover shooting insurance for the year, amongst other GNAS members benefits. The price that members pay the club is significantly less than the club pays to GNAS, and the rest is made up through charging members a 'target fee' for every club shooting session they attend. However, this last year it has become apparent that the club's payments to GNAS, combined with rising hire costs for our indoor venue, have become significantly greater than the income generated from club members through membership fees and target fees. The club's committee have therefore recommended that membership fees increase to £50 per year to bridge this shortfall, whilst keeping the target fee at £4 per session. Although the proposed changes will be voted on at the Island Archers AGM on 29th October 2008, the club will have had to pay members fees to GNAS prior to the AGM date, so it is requested that members pay the treasurer their subscription at the new rate prior to 30th September so that the club can pay GNAS. It will be assumed that members who do not pay the treasurer by this date wish to let their membership lapse, and they will no longer be insured to shoot.
At its Annual General Meeting held at Lilleshall on the 19th of April 2008, GNAS, archery's National Governing Body in the UK, has officially announced that it will adopt the new trading name of Archery GB.According to an item in the Summer 2008 edition of the official GNAS magazine Archery UK,"This seminal moment in the Society's history formalises a transition that is already in its infancy with the elite archers sporting new Archery GB branding. From this point on, the Archery GB brand will represent all facets of the organisation including the Olympic team, coaching programmes, events and membership. This change has come due to recognition that the Grand National Archery Society brand, whilst naturally close to many hearts, does not reflect the breadth and standing of the organisation representing British archery on a global scale. The logo is outdated and rather pale and the name conjures up images of an insular organisation with a penchant for horse-racing, which is an unfair reflection of a governing body of such stature." 14/03/2007 - Sports Festival Archery Individual Competition '07Congratulations to everyone who took part in the hotly-contested Lewis and Harris Sports Festival Archery Individual competition last night. The evening kicked off with the Junior Gents Competition, and many of the early-arriving seniors were incredibly impressed with the standard of competition, especially since most of the competitors hadn't had much archery experience, if any at all. The Seniors Competition was as keenly contested as ever, with the top two Senior Gents only separated by three or four points for most of the evening, whilst the winner of the Ladies showed the rest of the field a clean pair of heels, racking up a Senior Ladies club record of 441 for a Portsmouth round on her way to overall victory.
